Our Travel Soccer Program was established over forty years ago and six different ABGC teams have won U.S. Soccer National Championship Titles. In addition, as many as six ABGC teams have won VYSA State Cup Championship titles in a single year.
ABGC Boys Travel Teams play in the U.S. Club Soccer's Southeastern Regional League, NCSL (the National Capital Soccer League) and ODSL, (the Old Dominion Soccer League). ABGC has four Division I NCSL teams in the U15 to U18 high school boys age groups. In 2008, the U18 ABGC United, coached by ABGC Technical Director Bo Amato, won the Virginia State Cup Championship for their age group.
NCSL Developmental Boys Travel Program
ABGC U9 and U10 teams play in the NCSL Developmental Travel Program. In this program all games are strictly for experience and scores are not reported and standings are not kept. This procedure is consistent with U.S. Youth Soccer's position paper on Best Practices for developing young players.
NCSL Competitive Boys Travel Program
All U11 NCSL teams play to determine what division they will be in during the fall season of their U11 fall/spring seasonal year. Based on the results from the fall of the U11 season, teams are seeded in NCSL numbered divisions the spring season of the U11 seasonal year. Thereafter, at the end of each season of play, teams are promoted or relegated if they finish at the very top or the very bottom of their NCSL division.
U.S. Club Soccer Boys Southeast Region Program
ABGC U13, U15 and U17 boys teams play in the Southeast Regional League against some of the best clubs and teams in the southeast. This opportunity is invaluable for ABGC players who aspire to play in college and beyond.
ODSL Competitive Boys Travel Program
ABGC teams gain valuable playing experience by playing in the NCSL Developmental program as U9 and U10 teams, or by playing as older teams in ODSL. The ODSL program offers developing players who aspire to learn to play at a higher level the opportunity to learn the skills and to acquire the knowledge required.
ABGC Teams Are Professionally Coached
ABGC players are trained by professional staff coaches and trainers experienced in developing players capable of playing at progressively higher levels of play. ABGC coaches follow U.S. Soccer "Best Practice" for player development to prepare players to play at progressively higher levels.
ABGC Offers Advanced Soccer Learning
Since almost all developing players are visual learners, practices and match experience are supplemented by online instructional videos and proprietary online instructional labs that teach players the understanding of the game required to play at progressively higher levels. At the core of this program are 1 to 5 minute instructional videos, decision making exercises to teach players how to quickly make decisions under pressure, animated demonstrations of combination play in games, animated training of soccer specific skills and interactive learning where players answer game specific questions and then the correct solution and explanation are displayed on their computer screen.
Overuse and Burnout
Younger ABGC boys teams follow "best practices" to minimize overuse injuries and burnout. Older ABGC boys teams, whose bodies are more mature and capable of additional training, practice more often when necessary to prepare for competitions.
To prevent overuse injuries and burnout players have a period of "active rest" between seasons and pursue other activities to stay in condition. Players return to training six and eight weeks prior to the next season to get into condition and avoid injury.
